Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Modern Award?
A Modern Award is a legal document that sets out the minimum pay rates and conditions of employment for workers in a particular industry or occupation in Australia. They are enforced by the Fair Work Ombudsman.
How do I know which award applies to me?
Your award is determined by the industry you work in and the type of work you perform. Your employer must tell you which award covers you. If unsure, you can use the Fair Work Award Finder tool at fairwork.gov.au or call 13 13 94.
When do award rates change?
The Fair Work Commission reviews minimum wages and award rates annually. New rates typically take effect from the first full pay period on or after 1 July each year.
What is casual loading?
Casual loading is an additional percentage (usually 25%) paid to casual employees on top of their base rate. It compensates for not receiving paid leave entitlements (such as annual leave and sick leave) that permanent employees receive.
Are these rates before or after tax?
All award wage rates shown here are gross (before tax) rates. Your take-home pay will be less after income tax and any deductions.
What if my employer is paying me less than the award rate?
If you believe you are being underpaid, you should first raise it with your employer. If the issue is not resolved, contact the Fair Work Ombudsman on 13 13 94 (free call). They can investigate underpayment claims going back up to 6 years.
Do visa holders get the same minimum rates?
Yes. All workers in Australia are entitled to the same minimum pay rates regardless of visa status. This includes international students, working holiday makers (417/462 visa), skilled workers, and any other visa holders.
